October 29,2010 My First day
Today at my internship, my mentor gave me something to do right away. I was incharge of the kids activitites. I got them ready for a readind period where they would pick out books and I would read them to the kids. keeping kids busy is alot of hard work, but i think i did good as to mastering that skill today. The way I handled the children impressed my mentor very much, she was proud/excited to me getting along with the kids on the first day. I had a busy day today , there was no down time at all ! omg im so tired.

My tale of finding an internship has been the same as last year. "No, sorry we don't do that." "what school do you go to ?" Can you tell me again what you're doing...oh , no sorry." Nothing but a turn down, but finally I found one. I went up to this elementary school in Oakland, the lady was so nice she immediately accepted me on the spot. When thinking about leadership skills, I applied resourceful problem solving to my quest for an internship. Even though finding an internship is nothing but a big headache, I kept looking and I didn't give up. I continued calling around and going to different workplaces. My mentor is a teacher, her name is Juanita Matthews. while working with her I'll probably be working with the kids all the time, helping her read books and do arts and crafts, but I dont know what i'll be doing exactly. i guess i just have to wait and see =)

My workplace serves as a program from the City Of Oakland. I think. A lot of families benefit from this Elementary school, mainly because its a place where parents take their kids to receive an education and to get a break from their kids once in a while. One strength in my workplace is that the school and curriculum is very well organized. Another strength in my work place is that every one is so friendly and loving, they give great feed back as to being a great intern there. A weakness in my workplace is that lthe children do not follow directions, some of them need to learn their manners.

My daily routine at my internship requires me to apply all the leadership skills. (man kids take a lot) lol I use Communicating effectively when I talk with the kids, you cant yell at them to get them to do something, you talk politely. I think critcally and solve problems effectiviely when kids get into arguments or fighting over a toy. All of the leadership skills allow you to develop them in a classroom as well, but if I had to choos I would say Communicate Powerfully because working with children calls for alot of communication to know what the kids want and like. All the skills I apply to my internships I've developed at Impact acdemy and outside of school, but overall impact has helped me with the leadership skills the most. My role as a student is different from my role as an intern mainly because now I am the teacher and I have students to teach.

today I did alot of hands on things with the kids. I helped out during their scheduled time to be focused on learning colors, their solids from the liquids and even how to spell certain things. Basically today i helped build the kids motor skills and learning skills. My mentor just guided me through some of the lessons, but then she left me with a group of kids to work with.

From my interview with my mentor, I was basically introduced to the same vibe I already got from her. From the interview my mentor is a very determined teacher, she wants to see all her kids succeed that's why she encourages them to go to college at such a young age. My mentor thinks it's never too early to start preparing for college. Another thing I learned from my mentor to help me with the kids inorder to control them ( thats pretty hard). She also taught me to keep the kids engaged because if they aren't their minds will just wonder. Overall, the vibe I receive from my mentor is extremely good. My mentor is a good person and willing to go above and beyond to make sure her kids get a good education.

No , I do not feel other people are learning more than me at their internship. Everyone and their internships are different and they all offer different skills and techniques. I read Montrel, Jasmine's, Alexis's, Roxana's, and many more. From the blogs I went through many people are just writing the blogs because they HAVE TO. Only a few of the blogs I read were detailed, I would have to say katrinas was the most detailed. in order to make my blog better the prompts should be more interesting and should make me want to write more, but I don't think that's going to happen so I am going to have to deal with it and force myself to write more. It seems like people are blogging, some more than others. yes, I've been at my WLE for a while now. I'm never really bored at my internship,I'm working with kids which keeps me very occupied when I'm there. If I do get bored I know I can always ask my mentor to assign me something that I can do. The only new thing I did today at my WLE was take pictures of the kids while they were tought. (in action) I know I could be pushing this project a little further/faster. Time is limited and I know I need to step it up .
LAST BLOG !
Im so happy it was my last day at my internship. As my last day at my internship, I enjoyed the time I had with the kids. I still did my daily routine and helped out around the campus. One major thing I learned about myself through my internship this year was that I'm actually good with kids and connect with them very well. My realization of this skill did not change my mind about whether or not I wanted to make that my career. =) Kids are fun , but I dont think I would want to work with them evryday of my life. (Kudos to the teachers). One major thing I learned about the world of work was that it's a cold world out there and in order to survive you have to stay focused and remain determined. You also need to keep a clear path of what you're aiming for in life Yes , I finished my project. In order to stay on track I just made sure i started working early enough to make sure I had all my material in line. I probably will return to my internship to take more photos mainly because i dont think I have enough photos to go throughout my keynote.
